It Won't Be Like This For Long

Do you ever feel like just when you get your bearings and catch your breath, the entire landscape changes and it’s time to run again?

You finally get into a groove with the kids’ schedules, carpooling, extra-curriculars, and even a pocket of time for your own hobbies, and then… BOOM! School lets out and you’ve got to completely reconfigure your routines.

Or maybe you hit a stride at work and start easily scratching things off the never-ending to-do list, feeling good about progress and growth and then… WHAM! A colleague changes positions or market demands shift and you’re back in the land of juggling and chaos.

How about those stretches where things seems too good to be true: The lawn is doing great. The pool is staying clean. The bills are getting paid. The weekends are getting enjoyed and the weekdays are bringing fulfillment, and then… SMACK! A friend or family member falls ill and throws the whole scene of your life into a giant swirling mass of questions about what really matters and if you’re really happy.

Oh how we long for stasis, for straight lines, for smooth sailing and “easy” living. Oh how frustrating when we’re forced to grow and make changes, shed beliefs, ask big questions, and find new ways of doing things. Can’t things just stay the same? Can’t we just stay the course, keep our heads down, and call it day? It’s so inconvenient to grow…

And yet, for as much as we crave consistency and predictability, ironically, the the thing in our life that is most consistent and predictable is change. The one thing we can always count on is that, in the words of Darius Rucker, “it won’t be like this for long.” At times, knowing this is comforting. Watching your child struggle, going through a rough patch in a relationship, grappling with your own inner work— how nice to remember that it won’t be like this for long.

But when things are seemingly going great and you’re finally relaxing into that comfortable groove, the last thing you want to remember is that it won’t be like this for long.

This month, we welcomed 2 new team members to the Prism Family, bringing our team total to 11. For those who have been around since Prism’s inception, you may recall we started as a team of 2. Had we not been open to change, growth, and evolution along the way, we might still be a team of 2 or, worse, no team at all.

While the journey has been nothing short of fulfilling, it has also been challenging, and we’ve faced our own temptations to stay the course and ignore the call to growth. It helps tremendously to know we have a community like you that will help us ride those waves of change and grow in the directions we most need to. Thank you for your patience and understanding as Prism continues to evolve, and if you experience any hiccups in your work with us as we adjust to new routines and systems, we do hope you’ll let us know but that you’ll also remember: it won’t be like this for long.
